Offering Back-to-School Eye Exams in Dallas and Ft. Worth

Did you know that about 80 percent of what teachers present to children is in a visual form? That’s right – eight out of ten learning materials are in the form of books, blackboards, movies, computer screens and visual demonstrations. This means good vision is essential for learning. A child can have an eye exam at any time of the year, but because good vision is so important for success in school, the beginning of the school year is the perfect time for a vision exam.

The Importance of Children's Eye Exams in Dallas

Good vision is an important part of learning, so the start of the school year is an excellent time to have your child’s eyes checked. During a back to school eye exam, our pediatric eye doctor checks for vision problems that might hold kids back at school. Simply wearing prescription eyeglasses or contacts can make all the difference in a child’s academic, athletic prowess and quality of life.

While good vision is important to learning, good eyesight is essential to athletic performance and a rich social life. Good vision helps a volleyball player spike the ball over the net, for example, and allows a wide receiver to catch a football. Clear vision also helps a child recognize friends in the hallway, ride a bike to school and choose his or her favorite foods in the cafeteria.

During a back-to-school eye exam, our eye doctor will look for refractive errors that cause nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and colorblindness. Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, usually develops around the age of 6 or 7 years, and can worsen rapidly when a child is between 11 and 13 years old. To correct these refractive errors, our eye doctor might prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses.

A back to school eye exam can also detect misaligned eyes, “lazy eye,” eyestrain, and other eye conditions. It is important for parent's to know the signs of potential eye problems, like closing one eye to see clearly, frequent eye rubbing, and using fingers as a guide to read.
